Leimert Village is a project that is focused on carefully designing an architectural solution that provides co-living, coworking, and numerous public programs to the neighborhood of Leimert Park. The city is conscious of its need to increase density but at the same time, they do not want to become gentrified.
On an existing parking lot nestled between a series of public and private buildings, I propose a low-rise solution that integrates the community and the architecture. By utilizing prefabrication, this solution is simple in its feasibility and construction yet complex in its arrangement and attention to detail.
The use of shared kitchens, expansive outdoor community gardens and terraces, public performance spaces, and other interventions create a harmonious environment without overtaking the existing community.
Design Concept
The driver of the design was a consequence of the adjacent context. With railroads and a river to the east, lowrise industrial buildings to the west, and a vehicle bridge to the north, the decisions for the building placement and design were well informed.
Starting with an initial site massing, the private and public are seperated vertically. Next, the masses are broken down for an approachable scale. Finally, the private and public are connected to a vertical farm to provide vegetation for local restaurants and markets.
