Paying close attention to the adjacent context and focusing on site strategies, the new structure involves the local community through an array of
recreational programs. Keeping in place as much of the existing parking garage as possible, the new addition embraces the original concrete nature and
compliments it with nature, activity, and spaces for fun.
Adjacent Context / Access Analysis
The site is surrounded heavily by recreational facilities. A majority of which are for private use by the university athletes.
Daylight Analysis
The parking structure recieves an adequate amount of daylight throughout the entire year.
1.
The foot traffic that accesses the site is primarily from the East corner of the garage. There is a large walkway and this connect the parking structure to the rest of campus.
2.
Having a main access point, light was the next necessary component for a building with such a large footprint. The ramp slabs are completely taken away but the supporting structure remains.
3.
Next, there needed to be space to accommodate for 50% of the existing parking calculation. The end of the existing parking structure transforms into autonomous parking.
4.
The final product is a slices away from the existing “mass” and contrasts greatly from what once stood in it’s place. The apartments are filled in to the existing column/beam structure.
